Broadening your Hersey & Blanchard’s leadership style range

A model of leadership we often discuss during training is Hersey & Blanchard’s leadership style model. We ask our participants to fill out a questionnaire exploring how they would lead in different situations, to find out their favoured leadership style, and often find in the results a 2-3 style profile, meaning their primary and secondary leadership styles are ‘selling’ and ‘participating’. This is the most frequent style we find, as Hersey & Blanchard suggest and in our experience. There’s no best style; just the right style for the right person in a particular situation. We’re frequently asked when the other styles - ‘telling’ and ‘delegating’ - can be used effectively and how they can be developed, so we created a handout to guide people through their future leadership situations.
